XMM-Newton observations of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 and its central source

We present new results from the observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7–3946 (also G347.3–0.5) performed in five distinct pointings with the EPIC instrument on board the satellite XMM-Newton. RX J1713.7–3946 is a shelltype SNR dominated by synchrotron radiation in the X-rays. Its emission (emission measure and photon index) as well as the absorption along the line-of-sight has been characterized over the entire SNR. The X-ray mapping of the absorbing column density has revealed strong well-constrained variations (0.4 × 1022 cm−2 ≤ NH ≤ 1.1 × 1022 cm−2) and, particularly, a strong absorption in the southwest. Moreover, there are several clues indicating that the shock front of RX J1713.7–3946 is impacting the clouds responsible for the absorption as revealed for instance by the positive correlation between X-ray absorption and X-ray brightness along the western rims. The CO and H observations show that the inferred cumulative absorbing column densities are in excellent agreement with the X-ray findings in different parts of the remnant on condition that the SNR lies at a distance of 1.3 ± 0.4 kpc, probably in the Sagittarius galactic arm, instead of the commonly-accepted value of 6 kpc. An excess in the CO emission is found in the southwest suggesting that the absorption is due to molecular clouds. A search for OH masers in the southwestern region has been unsuccessful, possibly due to the low density of the clouds. The X-ray mapping of the photon index has also revealed strong variations (1.8 ≤ Γ ≤ 2.6). The spectrum is steep in the faint central regions and flat at the presumed shock locations, particularly in the southeast. Nevertheless, the regions where the shock impacts molecular clouds have a steeper spectrum than those where the shock propagates into a low density medium. The search for the thermal emission in RX J1713.7–3946 has been unsuccessful leading to a number density upper limit of 2 × 10−2 cm−3 in the ambient medium. This low density corresponds to a reasonable kinetic energy of the explosion provided that the remnant is less than a few thousand years old. A scenario based on a modified ambient medium due to the effect of a progenitor stellar wind is proposed and leads to an estimate of RX J1713.7–3946’s progenitor mass between 12 and 16 M. The X-ray bright central point source 1WGA J1713.4–3949 detected at the center of SNR RX J1713.7–3946 shows spectral properties very similar to those of the Compact Central Objects found in SNRs and consistent in terms of absorption with that of the central diffuse X-ray emission arising from the SNR. We rewiew some results of an investigation on the cognitive process involved in situations of mathematical lear ning. The issues have been selected because of their importance on the development of a didactical teaching of mathematics, centered in the characteristics of the subject learning that particular domain. Following this crite rium we present the most important features and applications that can be proposed by a cognitive study of: the influence of previous naive concepts on the representation of a cognitive domain; aspects related to problem re presentation; and error as a diagnostic instrument

Restarting Asset-Backed Securities and Current Developments in the Securitization of Financial Assets: The Case of the European Market

Since the inception of the 2007-2008 financial crisis, there has been increased interest on how to restart the Asset-Backed Securities (ABS) market especially in Europe. The crisis exposed several shortcomings in the securitization process which include inadequate due diligence on the part of investors, conflicts of interest and misaligned incentives among participants along the securitization chain, overreliance on rating agency risk models, and lack of transparency regarding collateral and deal structures. This paper therefore provides an insight into how ABS will be conducted in Europe after the recent financial crisis and highlights the current developments in the securitization of financial assets. The paper examined how the financial crisis of 2007-2008 has reshaped the business of ABS using data from the Association of Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) and European Securitization Forum (ESF) quarterly reports. A hypothesis was formulated and four research questions were answered with the help of secondary data. The hypothesis was tested using the student t-distribution and subjected to regression analysis. The data was analyzed with the use of Excel Analysis Toolpak and Pivot tables and charts. The results obtained showed that the financial crisis had a minimal impact on reshaping the ABS market. It was also observed that, ABS business after the crisis has mainly been reshaped by regulatory reforms. Chemoselective Reductive Heterocyclization by Controlling the Binomial Architecture of Metal Particles and Acid−Base Properties of the Support

2,1-Benzisoxazoles have been selectively synthesized through reductive heterocyclization of 2-nitroacylarenes using Pt-supported nanoparticles. The reaction involves a cascade process in which the first step is the reduction of the nitro group into hydroxylamine followed by heterocyclization through the nucleophilic attack of the hydroxylamine group to the carbonyl of the acyl group and further dehydration. The reaction was performed on Pt/C, Pt/TiO2, and Pt/MgO using hydrogen as the reducing agent under mild reaction conditions. The results showed that Pt/MgO was the most active and selective catalyst. The study of the influence of the crystal size of the metal on the activity and selectivity, combined with the reaction mechanism examined by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the adsorbed reactant, showed that the maximum activity and selectivity to the target compound can be achieved by controlling the architecture of metal particles and acid–base properties of the support. The effect of temperature on selectivity, the stability of the Pt/MgO catalyst, and the scope of the reaction have been studied. Finally, reductive heterocyclization using different metals (Pd and Au) supported on MgO has also been performed.Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo en Ciencias Aplicada

Rotavirus VP6 nanotubes show an antigen form-dependent adjuvant activity: Zika virus envelope protein monomer vs Zika virus-like particles

The structural protein of rotavirus (RV) VP6 can self-assemble into tubular polymeric structures under specific conditions of pH and ionic strength when expressed in recombinant systems. Previous studies have shown that RV VP6 nanotubes (VP6NT) have an adjuvant effect on the immunogenicity of norovirus virus-like particles (VLPs) in mice (Blazevic et al., 2011; Malm et al., 2016). The present study focused on the determination of adjuvant activity of VP6NT on the immunogenicity of monomers of the viral envelope (E) protein or of Zika virus (ZikV) VLPs. ZikV infection can cause congenital malformations in fetuses and the Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults, as the most severe consequences. To date, there is no treatment or vaccine available against ZikV. Several vaccine candidates against this virus have been reported and E protein has been selected as the primary antigenic determinant. Costs associated with febrile neutropenia in solid tumor and lymphoma patients - an observational study in Singapore.

BackgroundThe primary objective was to describe the total direct inpatient costs among solid tumor and lymphoma patients with chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia (FN) and the factors that were associated with higher direct cost. The secondary objective was to describe the out-of-pocket patient payments and the factors that were associated with higher out-of-pocket patient payments.MethodsThis was a single-center observational study conducted at the largest cancer center in Singapore. All of the adult cancer patients hospitalized due to FN from 2009 to 2012 were studied. The primary outcomes were the total hospital cost and the out-of-pocket patient payments (adjusted by government subsidy) per FN episode. Univariate analysis and multiple linear regression were conducted to identify the factors associated with higher FN costs.ResultsThree hundred and sixty seven adult cancer patients were documented with FN-related hospitalizations. The mean total hospital cost was US$4,193 (95$3,779-4,607) and the mean out-of-pocket patient payment was US$2,230 (95$1,976-2,484), per FN episode. The factors associated with a higher total hospital cost were longer length of stay, severe sepsis, and lymphoma as underlying cancer. The out-of-pocket patient payment was positively associated with longer length of stay, severe sepsis, lymphoma diagnosed as underlying cancer, the therapeutic use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF), the private ward class, and younger patients.ConclusionsThe total hospital cost and out-of-pocket patient payments of FN management in lymphoma cases were substantial compared with other solid tumors. Factors associated with a higher FN management cost may be useful for developing appropriate strategies to reduce the cost of FN for cancer patients

Effects of photoperiod on epididymal and sperm morphology in a wild rodent, the viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus)

The viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) is a seasonal South American wild rodent. The adult males exhibit an annual reproductive cycle with periods of maximum and minimum gonadal activity. Four segments have been identified in the epididymis of this species: initial, caput, corpus, and cauda. The main objective of this work was to relate the seasonal morphological changes observed in the epididymal duct with the data from epididymal sperm during periods of activity and gonadal regression using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Under light and electron microscopy, epididymal corpus and cauda showed marked seasonal variations in structural parameters and in the distribution of different cellular populations of epithelium. Initial and caput segments showed mild morphological variations between the two periods. Changes in epididymal sperm morphology were observed in the periods analyzed and an increased number of abnormal gametes were found during the regression period. During this period, anomalies were found mainly in the head, midpiece, and neck, while in the activity period, defects were found only in the head. Our results confirm that the morphological characteristics of the epididymal segments, as well as sperm morphology, undergo significant changes during the reproductive cycle of Lagostomus.Fil: Cruceño, A.
